A Group 1 winner in Australia as recently as May, the 4-year-old filly Royal Merchant will face a significantly easier field in the Magic Millions 3- and 4-year-old Stakes at six furlongs at Wyong Racecourse on Tuesday evening. An appearance in the $98,300 Magic Millions Stakes amounts to a career restart for Royal Merchant, who has won 4 of 16 races for the prominent stable of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. Royal Merchant has been beaten in four starts since an upset win at 17-1 in the Group 1 Goodwood Stakes at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide in May. More recently, Royal Merchant was fourth of seven, beaten 3 3/4 lengths as the 2-1 favorite, in the Grade 2 Hot Danish Stakes at seven furlongs at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney on Nov. 11. Royal Merchant, who tends to run from off the pace, will be fitted with blinkers for the first time in the Magic Million Stakes, which drew a field of 14. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Royal Merchant was 9-10 in early betting as of Monday morning. Semana, unraced since a fifth-place finish in the Winter Challenge Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens in July , was the 4-1 second choice. Later on the program, the $131,100 2-year-old division of the Magic Million Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs will have a field of eight. The field consists of six first-time starters, the maiden race winner Spywire, and Highness, who was sixth of 11 in the Group 3 Breeders Plate at five furlongs at Royal Randwick Racecourse in September. Spywire was an odds-on favorite in early betting on Monday, with the first-time starter Toque at 5-2. Spywire led throughout a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens on Nov. 15, pulling clear by 2 1/4 lengths. Toque, a filly trained by the prominent stable of Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, won two schooling races from the gate, or barrier trials, in November at distances of approximately a half-mile and 3 1/2 furlongs. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
