Australia: Quick pace at Coff's Harbour could benefit comebacking Cool Amigo

Steve Andersen|Feb 28, 2023

Cool Amigo may have an ideal race scenario when he starts for the first time since October in a five-furlong handicap at Coffs Harbour Racecourse in Australia on Wednesday evening.

Cool Amigo runs from a tracking position, and is part of a field of eight that includes three primary runners capable of setting a quick pace – King’s Gold, Scotland, and Toy Boy Roy.

Cool Amigo, an attractive 7-1 in early betting on Tuesday, will start from post 2, which should allow for a ground-saving trip. Trained by Brett Dodson, who is based at Coffs Harbour, Cool Amigo is winless in five starts since a maiden race at five furlongs at Queanbeyan Racecourse last March.

In four 2022 starts after the maiden win, Cool Amigo’s best result was a second in a five-furlong handicap at Murwillumbah in August. He later finished 10th and ninth in September and October before he was rested.

Dodson’s stable does not have a lot of runners, but is worth following. From Sept. 19 to Feb. 20, the span of his most recent 50 starters through Tuesday, Dodson won 13 races.

Cool Amigo is one of two runners for Dodson on the eight-race program at Coffs Harbour on Wednesday evening. In the race after Cool Amigo, Dodson starts the maiden Rinnero. Matthew Bennett has the mount on both runners.

First post time at Coffs Harbour is 9:15 p.m. Eastern or 6:15 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

Cool Amigo’s main rival is Toy Boy Roy, who won his sixth career start in a four-furlong maiden race at Coffs Harbour on Feb. 18, leading throughout and pulling clear to win by two lengths.

Toy Boy Roy was the 6-5 favorite in early betting on Tuesday. King’s Gold was 9-2, while Scotland was 7-1.

King’s Gold was fourth by a length in a five-furlong handicap at Coffs Harbour on Feb. 18, leading to deep stretch. Scotland is winless in six starts, but was second by a half-length in a six-furlong maiden race at Coffs Harbour on Feb. 18 and may appreciate a shorter distance.
