For the reigning Australian Horse of the Year, Pride of Jenni has not had a campaign befitting such an honor. A 7-year-old mare, Pride of Jenni has won 3 of 9 starts since the season began in August, but has lost six starts in Group 1 races. There is time to win at the highest level in Friday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup at 1 1/4 miles at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane. Pride of Jenni, a three-time Group 1 winner in her title year in the 2023-2024 season, was the 5-2 second choice in early betting for the $641,600 Doomben Cup as of Thursday. The Doomben Cup is Pride of Jenni’s fourth start of 2025. She was announced as retired after she bled when last of 11 in the Group 1 Champions Stakes last November, but was back in training early this year. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for international racing, including Australia Trained by Ciaron Maher, Pride of Jenni starts in the Doomben Cup with mixed recent form. She was ninth of 10 as the 5-2 favorite in the Group 1 Australian Cup at 1 1/4 miles at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne on March 29, but rebounded to win the minor Anniversary Vase at a mile at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne on May 3. Typical of most of her 38 races, which includes 10 wins, Pride of Jenni races near the front. In the Doomben Cup, Pride of Jenni drew the inside post, which is likely to result in jockey Craig Newitt urging the mare forward from the start to gain position. She could face early pressure from Bois d’Argent, who won the 2024 Doomben Cup in a 25-1 upset. Bois d’Argent was a well-beaten sixth behind Antino in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Gold Coast Racecourse near Brisbane on May 10, fading from contention in the stretch. Antino, the 2-1 favorite in early betting for the Doomben Cup, closed from eight of 13 to win the Hollindale Stakes at 8-1 and end a three-race losing streak since the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at a mile at Caulfield last October. Antino will start at 1 1/4 miles for the first time in his career, which includes 12 wins in 25 starts. The Doomben Cup is part of a nine-race program that begins at 9:43 p.m. Eastern or 6:43 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
