Powder Man will carry the role of favorite, as well as topweight, in a seven-furlong handicap at Coffs Harbour in Australia on Sunday evening in an attempt to end a four-race losing streak since February. Powder Man will start at seven furlongs for the first time at Coffs Harbour. He was second in a handicap at about six furlongs in March and in his last start on Sept. 2, both at Grafton Racecourse in the longest races of his career to date. In the Sept. 2 race, Powder Man closed from last in a field of 10 to finish third by slightly less than 1 1/2 lengths, closing powerfully in the final furlong. Powder Man carried 134.4 pounds that day, while race winner Golden Breeze carried 126.7 pounds. Powder Man, the mount of regular rider Jon Grisedale, has a weight assignment of 132 pounds against nine rivals in the race at Coffs Harbour. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Again, there are a few runners with lower assignments who can pose a threat, notably Barcelona Express and Clipper Ship. Barcelona Express, who will carry 125.6 pounds at Coffs Harbour, won a maiden race at about 6 1/2 furlongs at Lismore Racecourse on Sept. 7 in his 10th start. Barcelona Express stalked the pace and won by slightly more than a neck as the even-money favorite. This will be the first start against winners for Barcelona Express. A 4-year-old gelding, Barcelona Express is winless in two starts at seven furlongs, including a well-beaten fourth in a maiden race at Grafton on Aug. 22. Last April, Barcelona Express was even tried in a maiden race at about 1 1/4 miles at Ballina Racecourse, but finished eighth. Clipper Ship, who carries 126.7 pounds at Coffs Harbour, needed 16 races to beat maidens, finally doing so in a race at 6 1/2 furlongs at Coffs Harbour on Aug. 4. On Sept. 4, Clipper Ship finished third by 2 1/4 lengths in a handicap at Coffs Harbour, closing from ninth of 11 after briefly racing in traffic. Powder Man and Clipper Ship have similar running styles, which could lead to a fascinating stretch run if they can avoid trouble. Coffs Harbour has an eight-race program beginning at 10:45 p.m. Eastern or 7:45 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
