Australia: Odeum tries to turn luck around in Tattersall's Tiara

Steve Andersen|Jun 24, 2021

The 3-year-old filly Odeum is unlucky to be in the midst of a five-race losing streak entering Saturday’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara Stakes for fillies and mares at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Australia.

In the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 1/2 furlongs at Eagle Farm on June 12, Odeum closed steadily with a wide trip to lead briefly in the final furlong, only to be caught in the final strides by Brooklyn Hustle. Odeum was beaten less than a half-length.

The extra half-furlong of the Tattersall’s Tiara at seven furlongs may benefit Odeum, a winner of 3 of 9 starts, all for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent, Jr. Odeum won the Group 1 Caulfield 1000 Guineas at Caulfield Racecourse at a mile last October, her most recent victory.

The Tattersall’s Tiara drew a full field of 18. Odeum will be well backed along with Tofane, who won the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap against males at six furlongs at Eagle Farm on June 12.

The multiple stakes winner Savatiano will have her 41st start in the Tattersall’s Tiara. She was ninth, beaten 1 3/4 lengths, in the Group 1 Smith Cup at 6 1/2 furlongs at Eagle Farm on May 29 as the 3-1 favorite.

Subpoenaed, fifth by 1 1/4 lengths in the 18-runner Stradbroke after a wide trip, can show improvement.

Race strategy will play a pivotal role in the Tattersall’s Tiara. Odeum, one of two 3-year-old fillies in the field, started from post 2 in the Dane Ripper, but is drawn wide on Saturday. James McDonald, who was aboard for the Dane Ripper, has the mount.

McDonald, ranked third in the jockey standings at tracks in New South Wales, which includes Sydney, has a rare day of mounts at Eagle Farm, which is located in Brisbane, in the state of Queensland. McDonald rode the highly regarded older horse Zaaki to a win at Eagle Farm on June 12.

The Eagle Farm program begins at 9:43 p.m., Eastern, or 6:43 p.m., Pacific, on Friday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
