Mr Brightside was 19-1 when he won his first Group 1 in the Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, last year. Despite losses in six subsequent appearances in Group 1 races, the 5-year-old Mr Brightside will start favored in a field of 20 in the $2.6 million Doncaster Mile on Friday evening. Mr Brightside ended a six-race losing streak since the Group 2 Feehan Stakes in September with a half-length victory in the $3.32 million All-Star Mile at Moonee Valley Racecourse on March 18. The All-Star Mile field is determined by a fan ballot and is not a group-level race, but, as the prize money reflects, annually draws a Group 1-caliber field. In the Doncaster Mile, Mr Brightside will break from post 2 and be ridden for the first time by Zac Purton, the current leading rider in Hong Kong. Purton has won the Doncaster Mile three times, including on Sacred Falls in 2014. Sacred Falls won the 2013 Doncaster Mile and is the last two-time winner of the race, which is run under handicap conditions. Mr Brightside, trained by Ben and J.D. Hayes, will carry 122.3 pounds, slightly less than top weight Alligator Blood at 126.7. While Mr Brightside is a solid favorite in the big field, the race lacks a clear second choice. Fangirl and Converge were 10-1 on Thursday, followed by Zougotcha and Protagonist at 11-1. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Going Global, a nine-time stakes winner on turf in California the last two years, was 34-1 for her Australian debut.
