Vow and Declare and Gold Trip are respective winners of the 2019 and 2022 Melbourne Cups. They meet for the first time since that race was run in November in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney on Friday. The $1 million Tancred Stakes is run at 1 1/2 miles. Both Vow and Declare and Gold Trip have lost their first two starts this year. Vow and Declare, 10th in the 2022 Melbourne Cup, was 10-1 in early betting for the Tancred to record his first victory since he won the Group 2 Sandown Classic at Caulfield Racecourse in November. This year, the 7-year-old Vow and Declare has finished second by 1 1/4 lengths in races at 1 1/4 miles and 1 5/16 miles. The slightly longer distance of the Tancred should aid Vow and Declare’s chances. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing Gold Trip is winless in two starts since winning the Melbourne Cup. He ran second in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Sandown Racecourse on Feb. 25, and fifth by 7 1/4 lengths in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday. Gold Trip had a ground-saving trip but was no factor late in the Ranvet. Despite those losses, Gold Trip was the 3-1 favorite in early betting for the Tancred. Montefilia, 16th in the Melbourne Cup in November and second in the Ranvet, was the 9-2 second choice in early betting. A 5-year-old mare, Montefilia has won three Group 1 races in her 25-race career. Rosehill Gardens has a 10-race program beginning at 9:10 p.m. Eastern or 6:10 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available on DRFBets.com. Earlier on the Rosehill Gardens program, the New Zealand filly Prowess will be favored to win her Australian debut in the Group 1 Vinery Stud for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/4 miles. A winner of 6 of 8 starts, Prowess beat older horses in the Group 1 Bonecrusher Stakes at about 1 1/4 miles in New Zealand on March 11. Pavitra, the winner of the Group 3 Kembla Grange Stakes at a mile on March 10, has the best chance of the Australian-based fillies in the Vinery Stud. She was second in the Group 1 VRC Oaks at 1 9/16 miles at Flemington in November. Flemington hosts Australia’s richest race this week, the Group 1 Australian Cup, a $2 million race at 1 1/4 miles on Friday evening. Cascadian, second in the $3.32 million All-Star Mile at Moonee Valley Racecourse on March 18, will start favored in his 47th start. An 8-year-old gelding, Cascadian is winless in eight starts at Flemington, including a second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes in 2021 and a fifth in the 2022 Australian Cup. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
