Australia: Maid of Ore looks to bust another losing streak in Gundagai Cup

Steve Andersen|Apr 01, 2022

For the second consecutive year, the Gundagai Cup at Gundagai Racecourse in Australia arrives at a good time for the 7-year-old Maid of Ore.

Last April, Maid of Ore ended a 13-race losing streak with a one-length win in the Gundagai Cup at 1 1/8 miles. Sunday, Maid of Ore is part of a field of 10 in the Gundagai Cup where she has a chance to end a 14-race losing streak dating to last year’s race.

Trained by Nick Olive, Maid of Ore was 11th of 14 in the Canberra Cup at 1 1/4 miles at Canberra Racecourse on March 14 as a longshot. She was a more competitive third in a handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Feb. 25.

In Sunday’s race, Maid of Ore will carry top weight of 133 pounds. She had the same role of highweight last year, carrying 134.4 pounds.

Maid of Ore was 9-2 in early betting on Friday, the joint second choice with Girls Are Ready. Prince of Helena was the 2-1 favorite, and approaches the Gundagai Cup after finishing 12th by 4 1/4 lengths in the Country Mile Series final at Flemington on March 19.

Prince of Helena, who will carry 130 pounds in the Gundagai Cup, was second by a head in a seven-furlong qualifying race for the Country Mile final at Ballarat on Feb. 27 in her first start of 2022.

Girls Are Ready will have a rapid turnaround in the Gundagai Cup, having finished third by about 3 3/4 lengths in a handicap at 7 3/4 furlongs at Canterbury Park on Wednesday in her third start of March. Girls Are Ready has a friendly weight assignment of 121 pounds.

Gundagai has an eight-race program beginning at 11:10 p.m. Eastern or 8:10 p.m. Pacific on Saturday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
