A low weight assignment, and certainly the gelding’s recent race record, has given Another Wil the role of a strong favorite in Friday’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. The $2.61 million Doncaster Mile is a handicap, and Another Wil is firmly toward the bottom of the list of weights in the field of 20. Trained by Ciaron Maher, Another Wil has been assigned 110.2 pounds, far below topweight Think About It at 125.6 pounds. Another Wil, a 4-year-old gelding, has bloomed through the early months of the year, winning four consecutive starts, including his stakes debut in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude at 7 1/2 furlongs on March 30 at Rosehill Gardens as the 3-4 favorite. Jockey Jamie Kah, who won four races at Ballarat Racecourse on Wednesday, has been the regular rider of Another Wil this year and has the mount in the Doncaster Mile. :: Get free past performances, analysis, and picks for Australian racing While the weight assignment and winning streak are encouraging, Another Wil was not helped by an outside draw in a field of 20. The gelding is capable of racing near the front, and saving some ground will be vital in a race run around one turn. The Doncaster Mile is the richest of 10 races at Randwick, the first of two consecutive Friday programs (Saturday, local time) that consist of The Championships. There are four Group 1 races this weekend and four Group 1 races next Friday. The Doncaster Mile lacks a clear second choice. Celestial Legend, who won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas for Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds on March 9, was 7-1 in early betting Wednesday, partially because the two-time stakes winner has been assigned 108 pounds. Militarize, second by a head in the Randwick Guineas and third by a length against older runners in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs on March 23, was 8-1, the same price as Obamburumai. A 4-year-old Japanese-bred, Obamburumai has won 4 of 6 starts and will have his 2024 debut in the Doncaster Mile. A two-time graded stakes winner in Japan, Obamburumai has not raced since he scored a slight upset in the $6.41 million Golden Eagle Stakes at 7 1/2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens last November. Obamburumai, who will be ridden by Damian Lane, will carry 121 pounds. The other three Group 1 races at Randwick on Friday include the $1.96 million T.J. Smith Stakes at six furlongs, the $1.3 million Australian Derby at 1 1/2 miles, and the $654,700 Inglis’ Sires Stakes for Southern Hemisphere 2-year-olds. All are run under allowance conditions. The Smith Stakes is the first start of 2024 for I Wish I Win, winner of the 2023 Smith Stakes and runner-up in the $12.8 million Everest Stakes at six furlongs at Randwick last October, the world’s richest sprint. I Wish I Win, who runs from off the pace, was the 3-1 second choice in early betting behind 2-1 Imperatiz, a winner of 19 of 26 starts. Imperatiz is a 10-time Group 1 winner in New Zealand and Australia, including her last start in the William Reid Stakes at six furlongs on March 23 at Moonee Valley. James McDonald, who leads Australian riders in money earnings, rides I Wish I Win and has the mount on expected favorite Riff Rocket in the Australian Derby. A winner of 6 of 10 starts, Riff Rocket, a gelding by American Pharoah, has won two Group 1 races in the last six months – the Victorian Derby at 1 9/16 miles at Flemington in November and the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas at 1 1/4 miles on March 23. Kah rides Zardozi, a filly who won the Group 1 Victorian Oaks at 1 9/16 miles at Flemington last November. The Inglis’ Sires Stakes is a rematch of Lady of Camelot and Storm Boy, the first- and third-place finishers in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes on March 23 at Rosehill Gardens. In that six-furlong race, Storm Boy overcame a slow start and traffic issues in a field of 16 to lose by 1 1/2 lengths to Lady of Camelot. Storm Boy was the 3-2 favorite in early betting for the Inglis’ Sires Stakes, while Lady of Camelot was 3-1. Both are trained by Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
