Australia: Lighter recent schedule should have My Blue Jeans ready to go in Albury feature

Steve Andersen|May 23, 2020

Since mid-March, the durable gelding My Blue Jeans has had seven starts in Australia, two of which were within five days in late April.

My Blue Jeans has raced at a less hectic pace of late, finishing third by 1 3/4 lengths in a handicap at Goulborn Racecourse on May 8, his lone start this month. A brief gap between races may be in favor of My Blue Jeans when the 5-year-old gelding has his first start at Albury Racecourse in a seven-furlong handicap on Monday.

Albury is located about 175 miles northeast of Melbourne, in the Australian countryside.

Trained by Danny Williams, My Blue Jeans will share high weight of 134.4 pounds in a field of eight with the 5-year-old mare Sepulchre, who has not raced since January.

My Blue Jeans has won 5 of 37 starts. He won a seven-furlong handicap at Goulborn on April 26, ending a 10-race losing streak that began in July. My Blue Jeans was third in a one-mile handicap at Wagga Wagga Racecourse on April 30.

Jockey Nick Heywood, who has ridden My Blue Jeans in the past, has the mount on Monday. My Blue Jeans typically races as a stalker.

Enzed Beer, a 4-year-old New Zealand-bred gelding, is the highest-rated runner in the field, but apprentice jockey Heni Ede claims three kilos, or 6.6 pounds, which reduces the weight assignment to 132 pounds.

Enzed Beer was ninth of 14 in a five-furlong handicap at Albury on May 15 as the 7-2 favorite in his Australian debut. Ede was aboard for that race, Enzed Beer’s sixth consecutive loss.

The race lacks a clear pacesetter, although My Blue Jeans did set the pace in the April 30 race.

Let’s Get Animal will need a pace to follow. The 4-year-old gelding closed from ninth in a field of 10 to win a seven-furlong handicap at Wagga Wagga on May 10, ending a five-race losing streak.

First post time for Albury’s seven-race program is 10:55 a.m. Eastern or 7:55 a.m. Pacific on Sunday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
