Jockey Dean Holland died on Monday as a result of injuries sustained in a spill at Donald Racecourse in the Australia countryside, according to the state regulatory agency Racing Victoria and the Victorian Jockeys Association. Holland was involved in a two-horse spill in a five-furlong maiden race. Holland was treated by paramedics at the track, but succumbed to injuries. Kelly and the two horses involved were not injured, according to a statement issued by Racing Victoria. The remainder of the program at Donald was canceled. The track is located approximately 150 miles northwest of Melbourne. Holland began riding in December 2005 in the state of South Australia, and won his first race a month later. He rode more than 1,100 winners, including a race at Ararat last Thursday. Holland won two Group 1 races –the Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide in 2010 and the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne last month. Holland had won 82 races at tracks in Victoria since the 2022-2023 season began last August. Holland rode Tralee Rose to a ninth-place finish in the 2021 Melbourne Cup, his last appearance in the race. Holland is survived by a wife and four children.
