Australia: Greek Tycoon, Kinross can continue comebacks in Sunday handicap

Steve Andersen|Dec 03, 2022

There was much to like about the recent comebacks of Deepmind and Greek Tycoon in Australia.

Both had been off since the first half of the year. Greek Tycoon won his comeback, while Deepmind was second.

Those races served as preps for appearances in a six-furlong handicap at Wagga Wagga Racecourse on Sunday evening across American time zones.

Greek Tycoon, a winner of 2 of 11 starts, won a handicap at about six furlongs at Gundagai Racecourse on Nov. 12, closing from third in a field of nine in his first start since June.

Trained by Mitchell Beer, Greek Tycoon has won two of his last four starts, a sequence that includes a win in a maiden race in his eighth start at six furlongs at Albury Racecourse in May.

Deepmind was second by 3 1/2 lengths in a handicap at 5 1/4 furlongs at Wagga Wagga on Nov. 21 in his first start since March and first start against winners. Deepmind was beaten 3 1/2 lengths by the heavily favored Mogo Magic, who is undefeated in two starts.

Deepmind has won once in three starts for trainer Matthew Dale.

For Sunday evening’s race at Wagga Wagga, Deepmind was a slight favorite at 7-5 in early betting on Saturday, with Greek Tycoon the second choice at 5-2. They are part of a field of 10 in the fifth race on an eight-race program that begins at 9:55 p.m. Eastern or 6:55 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

Deepmind and Greek Tycoon are likely to be in pursuit of Kinross, a winner of 2 of 18 starts who often sets the pace. Kinross won her last start in a five-furlong handicap at Wagga Wagga on Nov. 21, her first race since June.

A 5-year-old mare, Kinross was ridden by Jeff Penza on Nov. 21. Penza will ride Deepmind on Sunday evening’s race, leaving apprentice Jeff Stanley aboard Kinross.
