Fire Lane is the only winner in a field of 13 in the $135,100 2-Year-Old Classic at Wyong Racecourse in Australia on Tuesday evening across American time zones, but the recent victory has not afforded the filly much respect in early betting. As of Monday, Fire Lane was 7-1, with the colt Mach Ten (2-1) and fillies Summer Loving (5-2) and Infatuation (7-2) gaining more support even though they were beaten in their last starts. Fire Lane, trained by Brad Widdup, won her debut in the Max Lees Classic at 4 1/2 furlongs at Newcastle on Nov. 12, and returned to finish first in a schooling race from the gate, or barrier trial, at 4 1/2 furlongs at Newcastle on Nov. 29, finishing a little more than a half-length in front of Summer Loving. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Mach Ten, trained by Michael Freedman, was second by slightly less than three lengths to Empire of Japan in his lone start, the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate at five furlongs at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Empire of Japan also debuted in the Breeders’ Plate and has yet to start again. Infatuation is the most experienced runner in the 2-Year-Old Classic, having finished behind the well-regarded Barber when fifth in the Kirkham Plate for 2-year-old at Randwick on Oct. 2 and second by a head to the same rival in the $646,600 Golden Gift Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens on Nov. 5. Summer Loving was third after a troubled start in the Golden Gift in her debut, beaten slightly more than a length as the 7-2 favorite. Summer Loving is out of Serena Bay, who won the 2016 Golden Gift and was later third in a Group 2 sprint for Southern Hemisphere 2-year-old fillies. The 2-Year-Old Classic is the sixth race on a seven-race program that begins at 9:45 p.m. Eastern or 6:45 p.m. Pacific.
