Australia: Experience abounds in Wagga Wagga feature

Steve Andersen|Feb 07, 2023

There is no shortage of experience among the nine runners in the fifth race at Wagga Wagga Racecourse in Australia on Wednesday evening. They have combined to make 352 starts.

Among those veterans, the 6-year-old gelding Tullys Gold is a good fit in the field. A winner of 6 of 30 starts, Tullys Gold won a handicap at about 1 1/16 miles at Wangaratta Racecourse on Dec. 5 and followed with a fourth by 3 3/4 lengths in a one-mile handicap at Wagga Wagga on Dec. 23 in his most recent start.

Tullys Gold closed from fifth to be closest to the front at the finish. The race at Wagga Wagga has turned out to be productive. Dip Me Lid, who finished third, returned to win on Jan. 17.

Tullys Gold will be joined as a closer by the 7-year-old gelding Ruban Bleu, who was the 5-2 favorite in early betting on Tuesday. This will be Ruban Bleu’s 47th start and third race in the last six weeks.

Ruban Bleu won a seven-furlong handicap at Canberra on Dec. 30 to end a 26-race losing streak, but followed with an eighth-place finish in a field of nine at Wagga Wagga on Jan. 27. Ruban Bleu was not helped by a slow start on Jan. 27, losing by 3 1/2 lengths.

Mr Gee, seventh behind Tullys Gold on Dec. 23; and Milamoo, fourth by slightly less than 1 1/2 lengths in a one-mile handicap at Newcastle on Jan. 28, are two other contenders in Wednesday evening’s race.

Mr Gee has won 5 of 26 starts, making him relatively lightly raced in this field. Milamoo has won 5 of 44 starts, and was second at 20-1 in the minor Cowra Cup at Orange Racecourse on Jan. 15, closing from fifth to miss by slightly more than a half-length.

Milamoo was an intriguing 5-1 in early betting on Tuesday.

Wagga Wagga has a seven-race program beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern or 7 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
