Australia: Dubai Centre gets class test at Goulburn

Steve Andersen|Aug 06, 2022

A two-race winning streak since late June has forced the Australian gelding Dubai Centre into a higher class of handicap runners in a seven-furlong race at Goulburn Racecourse on Monday.

Judging from his running style and the race distance, Dubai Centre should be able to handle the class test.

Trained by John Rolfe, Dubai Centre ended an 11-race losing streak in a handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs at Dubbo Racecourse on June 26, and followed quickly with a head win in a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs at Albury on July 12. In both races, Dubai Centre closed from off the pace to lead in the final sixteenth.

During the losing streak, Dubai Centre was second in five races, getting within a neck of winning twice.

At Goulburn, Dubai Centre is part of a field of 11 in the fourth race on a seven-race program that begins at 11 p.m. Eastern or 8 p.m. Pacific on Sunday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

While Dubai Centre is taking a jump in class, Deel With Me is facing easier competition in his first start since a ninth-place finish in a one-mile handicap at Orange Racecourse in March.

Deel With Me, trained by Bjorn Baker, has won 3 of 14 starts. Deel With Me closed from eighth of 11 to win a one-mile handicap at Mudgee Racecourse on Feb. 27, his lone win in six starts this year.

Leather Jacket Lew and Street Cred, who have not raced since February and March, are outsiders who are expected to contribute to a solid pace.

Such a scenario would help The Halo, a lightly raced filly who beat maidens in her seventh start in a seven-furlong race at Bathurst on July 28. Similar to Dubai Centre and Deel With Me, The Halo tends to run from off the pace.
