The Australian gelding Cool Jakey has won three of six starts and would arguably have a better record if problems at the gate had not surfaced on occasion since his career began in February. When he starts well, Cool Jakey has been tough to beat in sprints. With his favorable record, Cool Jakey will be favored to win his second consecutive start in a seven-furlong handicap at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Friday evening. The handicap is part of a 10-race program that begins at 8:30 p.m. Eastern or 5:30 p.m. Pacific. He pulled away to prevail by slightly more than 2 1/4 lengths. The race at Randwick will be the third career start for Cool Jakey at seven furlongs. He has yet to win at the distance. He had a troubled start when third in a handicap at seven furlongs in March, and was sixth in the South Pacific Handicap at the distance in April when found to be lame after the race. Cool Jakey did not race again until Dec. 1 when he finished fifth of nine in a handicap at 6 1/4 furlongs on the infield Kensington course at Randwick after a troubled start. On Friday evening, Cool Jakey is part of a field of 10 and has a friendly weight assignment of 118 pounds compared to topweight Art Cadeau at 129. Art Cadeau, a longshot in this field, was group stakes-placed earlier in his career, but is winless in his last 10 starts. He is best known for winning the restricted Kosciuszko Stakes, worth $953,000, in October 2021. Cool Jakey’s main rival is the European import Hellsing, a stakes winner as a 2-year-old in Ireland in 2022. Now trained by Annabel Neashem, Hellsing was last of nine in the Celebration Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland last July in his only start as a 3-year-old. Hellsing finished first in a six-furlong schooling race from the gate, or barrier trial, at Warwick Farm Racecourse in Sydney on Dec. 22 in preparation for his Australian debut. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
