Australia: Carabinier, Sirius Magic enter Northam Traders' Sprint off victories
Carabinier and Sirius Magic won minor handicaps a little more than an hour apart at Ascot Racecourse in Perth, Australia, on May 13.
Carabinier ended a four-race losing streak, while Sirius Magic won for the first time in three starts. Neither has won consecutive races in their brief careers, but have excellent chances to do so in the Northam Traders’ Sprint, a handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs at Northam Racecourse on Monday. Northam is located just east of Perth in Western Australia.

The race drew a field of 11, and is the first start since May 13 for Carabinier and Sirius Magic.
Carabinier, a 3-year-old Southern Hemisphere gelding, has won 2 of 11 starts for trainer Paul Jordan, who is based at Ascot. Carabinier won from a stalking position in a handicap at six furlongs on May 13, but can set the pace.
Sirius Magic, a 4-year-old gelding, has won 2 of 5 starts for trainers Sean and Jake Casey. Sirius Magic is likely to race near the front and is well drawn in post 4 to accommodate that style.
Sirius Magic’s win at seven furlongs at Ascot on May 13 was his second race after a four-month layoff. He won his debut in a maiden race at five furlongs at Northam last June.
The Traders’ Sprint is part of an eight-race program at Northam that begins at 12:25 a.m. Eastern on Monday, or 9:25 p.m. Pacific on Sunday. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.
The Traders’ Sprint will be the first start since February for the 4-year-old gelding Inflation, a winner of 3 of 16 starts. Inflation ran without success in tougher races from November through February at Ascot through the Australian summer. Inflation, who tends to run near the front, was a winner at Northam in 2018.
