Australia: Back-to-back wins earn Boston Rocks a start at Royal Randwick

Steve Andersen|Aug 21, 2023

Consecutive wins as an odds-on favorite have led to a move to town for the promising Australian gelding Boston Rocks.

Boston Rocks won a maiden race at Gosford Racecourse on July 13 in his second start and first race in five months. Boston Rocks won his debut against winners in a six-furlong handicap at Wyong Racecourse on Aug. 3.

Those wins at countryside tracks have provided a foundation for Boston Rocks to start in a handicap at 6 1/4 furlongs on the infield Kensington course at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on Tuesday evening. With few exceptions, races at Randwick are tougher than those at Gosford and Wyong.

Boston Rocks has been trained by Nathan Doyle for his recent wins, having started for Scott Singleton earlier this year. Boston Rocks was eighth of nine in his career debut on the Kensington course in February before he was rested and moved to Doyle’s stable.

The Tuesday evening race is part of a seven-race program that begins at 11:25 p.m. Eastern or 8:25 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets.com.

Boston Rocks is part of a full field of 10 and breaks from post 7. Ashley Morgan, aboard for the two recent wins, has the mount.

Boston Rocks set the pace at Wyong and is likely to be near the front in this race. Boston Rocks could face an early threat from Ceasefire, a four-time winner in 20 starts who has lost his last 11 starts since May 2022. Ceasefire has been second or third in his last three starts.

A quick pace will help both Shines and Undivided.

Shines has won two of his last four starts since the beginning of June. Shines won a handicap by a head at 6 1/4 furlongs at Canterbury Racecourse on July 26 in a race at this class level by stalking the pace.

Undivided has started twice, winning his debut in a maiden race at Warwick Farm on July 19, and finishing fifth by slightly more than 2 1/4 lengths after a slow start in handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens on Aug. 5.
