OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Three months ago, Aunt Babe won her career debut by 7 1/2 lengths as a well bet third choice in a field off 11 at Belmont Park. But fame was fleeting for the New York-bred filly, who in two subsequent starts was beaten a combined 34 lengths. Saturday, dismissed at 39-1 – the second longest shot in a six-horse field – Aunt Babe reverted back to her debut, rallying from last under Eric Cancel to nip Pure Silver by a nose in the $150,000 Fifth Avenue division of the New York Stallion Series at Aqueduct. It was a half-length back to Miss Hot Stones, the 4-5 favorite, in third. Wegetsdamunnys, Velvet Trinni, and Beaux Arts completed the order of finish. Aunt Babe, a daughter of Desert Party, was making her first start for trainer James W. Ferraro, who won his first stakes race since Lorccan took the Coyote Lakes Stakes here in December 2008. Ferraro said this month also marked his 40th year training horses. “What a way to celebrate,” he said. Aunt Babe, owned and bred by Louis Ferrari, had made her first three starts for trainer Carlos Martin. Following her 17 3/4-length loss in the Shesastonecoldfox Stakes at Finger Lakes on Oct. 23, she was transferred by Ferrari to Ferraro. In 2012, that owner-trainer tandem campaigned Bella Silver, the mother of Aunt Babe, who never won a race. “I was supposed to get her in April but things worked out different and [Martin] got her,” Ferraro said. Aunt Babe was ridden to victory by Eric Cancel, who won three races on Saturday’s card. Cancel had Aunt Babe last in the early going, but on the inside following Pure Silver, who was fifth. Velvet Trinni, a maiden, set the pace under Trevor Simpson with Pure Silver, Beaux Arts, and Miss Hot Stones chasing her through an opening quarter in 22.34 seconds. Miss Hot Stones, under Kendrick Carmouche, moved into second and stalked Velvet Trinni through a half-mile run in 46.18 seconds. In the stretch, Chris DeCarlo had Pure Silver advancing along the rail while Cancel guided Aunt Babe into the four-path. Miss Hot Stones was between that pair but just going evenly. Aunt Babe was going the better of the trio and despite losing the bob, won the race. Aunt Babe covered the six furlongs in 1:12.92 and returned $81. “I put my hands down on her and I decided to make my move from the quarter pole,” Cancel said. “I knew I had horse at the end, so I just tried to go on the outside and get a little bit of an advantage. She kept on running and the trip worked out really well.”
