HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Audible, working for the first time since his impressive victory in the Grade 1 Florida Derby 13 days earlier, breezed an easy half-mile in 48.74 seconds Friday morning at Palm Beach Downs. Audible was one of two of trainer Todd Pletcher’s four potential Kentucky Derby starters to work at the training center Friday along with Louisiana Derby winner Noble Indy. Audible, working in company inside the older, graded stakes-placed You’re To Blame, was traveling easily throughout, finishing on even terms with his mate after fanning about four or five paths wide off the turn. He then proceeded to edge clear on the gallop-out after covering five furlongs in 1:02.22. Pletcher was visibly pleased with the drill, which was sharper than usual for Audible, who tended to be somewhat complacent during training hours in the weeks leading up to the Florida Derby. “For him, I thought it was outstanding,” Pletcher said. “He’s not always an overzealous work horse, but this morning he seemed on his game and focused. I thought he did very well. Right now, I just want to make sure we have enough in him conditioning wise coming back in five weeks off a mile-and-an-eighth race. We’re just trying to have him, all of them, peak on the day [of the Derby], and I thought this morning was a perfect step in that direction. I know that sometimes he doesn’t work as well as others, but leading up to this race, you’d like all three of his works to be good, and the first one was excellent.” Noble Indy, working about 30 minutes earlier, just after dawn, completed five furlongs in 1:01.19 in company with the 3-year-old maiden winner and stakes-tested Road to Damascus, negotiating his final quarter in 24.50 without urging while finishing a length clear of his workmate before increasing his advantage going out six panels in 1:14.87. Noble Indy was equipped with blinkers this morning after breezing without blinkers last week. “We’ve got to pick it up a little bit now since he’s going to have six weeks between races,” Pletcher said. “He’s never been a horse that’s been a fantastic gallop-out horse, but I thought today was solid. Blinkers keep him a little more focused.” Audible and Noble Indy are two of four horses Pletcher currently has pointed to the Derby, along with Wood winner Vino Rosso, who returned to Palm Beach Downs earlier this week, and Magnum Moon, who was to run in the Arkansas Derby on Saturday. Pletcher said Magnum Moon also would return to the training center Sunday, with all four scheduled to ship to Louisville on April 23 and to have their final Derby works at Churchill Downs on Friday, April 27. The Pletcher quartet represents four of six possible Kentucky Derby contenders who’ll be stabled in South Florida by the end of the weekend. Wood runner-up Enticed is presently at the Palm Meadows training center, while Florida Derby runner-up Hofburg remains at Payson Park, where he’s scheduled to breeze Sunday. ◗ Pletcher confirmed Friday that You’re To Blame would run next Saturday in the $1.2 million Charles Town Classic. He also breezed Outplay, a very impressive allowance winner here on Florida Derby Day, an easy and very sharp four furlongs in 49.27 Friday morning at Palm Beach Downs as he prepares for the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Sprint on the Kentucky Derby undercard. ◗ Pletcher won the first 2-year-old race of the current Gulfstream Park session with Valkyrie Gold, a Florida-bred daughter of Exclusive Quality, who ran down a stubborn Nancysaidso as the even-money favorite in Thursday’s finale. ◗ Sunday’s 11-race program at Gulfstream features a trio of allowance races topped by the afternoon’s ninth event to be decided at a mile on the turf for a $48,000 purse. The eight-horse field is led by stakes winner General McGooby, who makes his first start since finishing a tiring sixth after setting the pace in the Tropical Park Derby here Dec. 30.
