Attraction loses Falmouth

Nothing lasts forever, and on Tuesday Attraction's unbeaten record ended at eight when she finished second to Soviet Song in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

As she had when winning the 1000 Guineas, the Irish 1000 Guineas, and the Coronation Stakes, Attraction tried to take them all the way in the $365,000 one-mile contest, in which the 3-year-old filly was meeting older competition for the first time. Jockey Kevin Darley put Attraction, the 4-5 favorite, on the lead, and they held it until approaching the eighth pole, when Johnny Murtagh pounced with Soviet Song.

The winning margin for the 5-2 second choice was 2 1/2 lengths, with the final time for the straight mile on good ground a swift 1:36.11, just .61 of a second off the track mark set by Lovers Knot in the 1998 Falmouth.

The 4-year-old Soviet Song is trained by James Fanshawe.
