Attfield targeting different stakes with Mr. Hustle, Pleasecallmeback

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Owner William Werner’s one-two finishers in Sunday’s $103,600 Soaring Free Stakes, Mr. Hustle and Pleasecallmeback, may go their separate ways this fall, according to trainer Roger Attfield.

Mr. Hustle extended his unbeaten record to three races when scoring by 2 1/2 lengths in his turf debut in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds. Attfield said the $235,000 yearling purchase, a Kentucky-bred son of Declaration of War, is headed to the Grade 1 Summer Stakes here Sept. 15. The one-mile turf event is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Win and You’re In race.

“The idea with this horse is probably the Summer Stakes,” Attfield said.

Fresh off a sharp debut win going 6 1/2 furlongs, during which he ran greenly on the grass, Pleasecallmeback rallied from fourth to finish a clear second in the Soaring Free.

“He ran well, also,” Attfield stressed. “I probably won’t run both of them in the Summer Stakes. [Pleasecallmeback] is a Canadian-bred, and the Cup and Saucer is in October.”

Pleasecallmeback, a $200,000 yearling purchase by Hard Spun, seems made-to-order for the $225,000 Cup and Saucer Stakes, a restricted 1 1/16-mile turf route here Oct. 6.

Fair Maiden possible for Natalma

The Arlington-based Fair Maiden crushed a good group of local 2-year-old fillies in Saturday’s $104,600 Catch a Glimpse Stakes. After stalking favored Fast Scene in the 6 1/2-furlong grass sprint, she drew off in the stretch to prevail by 7 1/2 lengths, earning a big 91 Beyer Speed Figure. She had earned a 90 Beyer in her dominant second-out maiden win over Arlington’s Polytrack on July 21.

Trainer Eoin Harty said the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes, a one-mile turf event for fillies here Sept. 15, is under consideration for Fair Maiden, a Godolphin homebred by Street Boss. The Natalma also is a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifier.

“Certainly, I’ll give all these races a look, depending on how she comes out of this race,” Harty said. “She’s kind of going through a growth spurt right now, and she’s got a bit more leg than she does belly, but I’ll go easy on her after this, and if she’s doing well for the Natalma, she’ll be back.”

Turf Sprint Series concludes

Wednesday night’s feature is a $25,000 starter allowance over five furlongs on the inner turf, dubbed the finals of the Woodbine Turf Sprint Series.

The first two winners of the series are in the eight-horse field. Stormy Rush won the opening leg in his 11-year-old debut and then lost the second leg by a nose to Stormy Rush. After leading the way, Nashville Knight was narrowly beaten in both races. The new shooter is Reconfigure, who is coming off a solid third in a second-level optional claimer.

The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover for the eighth and final race on Wednesday is $243,328.
