Attfield saddles two contenders

Ron Gierkink|Jul 07, 2008

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Roger Attfield will take two shots at Wednesday's Repercussion Stakes at Woodbine when he runs Quelle Beaute and Sudsy Baby in the $100,000 race.

Curiously, the 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint is the prep for the Aug. 2 Royal North, a Grade 3 stakes which is run at just six furlongs.

Quelle Beaute was competitive in each of her three turf starts this year. She was third in a $100,000 optional claimer going a mile at Gulfstream in March, and subsequently finished fifth in an allowance at Keeneland. She lost her last race here May 28, in a 6 1/2-furlong optional claimer, by a nose to Star Operator.

"She's been running well, but she just hasn't been getting it done," said Attfield. "There are very few opportunities to run in stakes at that distance here, and I'd really like her to get some black type."

Sudsy Baby wasn't an impact player in her first two appearances of the year, in a pair of sprints on the Polytrack. She found the winner's circle for the first time in two years July 2, when she captured an optional claimer going 1 1/16 miles at 10-1.

Attfield said he isn't keen on shortening up Sudsy Baby in distance.

"It's not ideal, but there are few other situations for her," he said.

Marina Ballerina figures to lead the way, with Becky Sharp in close proximity.

Marina Ballerina has been freshened since her fading sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes on May 11, and is shedding the blinkers. She won a minor sprint stakes on the grass at Monmouth last summer.

Becky Sharp took her season opener in the six-furlong Zadracarta Stakes after setting a slow pace. Todd Kabel inherits the mount from Robert Landry, who's sticking with Quelle Beaute.

Glitter Rox got the job done after coming from off the pace in each of her first two grass starts, including a one-mile optional claimer May 19. Three weeks ago when favored in the 1 1/16-mile Tattling Stakes, she was too sharp early and wound up seventh over a course labeled yielding.

You Will Love Me, a three-time restricted stakes winner in 2007, ran flat in both of her outings this year.

Second Offense and Riverada finished one-two in a June 7 optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs.

The pick seven carryover is $40,855.
