The Attard clan runs four of the 10 fillies in Tuesday’s $100,000 Rondeau Bay on the Prince of Wales undercard at Fort Erie. It’s one of two 6 1/2-furlong dirt stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds on the card, along with the $100,000 Lake Erie for the boys. Trainer Kevin Attard entered Brengungirl, Rhaenyra, and Zippy Gamble in the Rondeau Bay. His father, Tino, runs Wozniacki, who’s owned by Kevin’s son Joshua and his daughter Tanya. All but Zippy Gamble worked a half-mile on the dirt training track at Woodbine Sept. 2, when Brengungirl covered the distance in 49.60 seconds while the other two went in 48.40. “Josh was there to watch them and he thought they all worked good,” Kevin Attard said. “Rhaenyra and Wozniacki worked together. Brengungirl is a little more aggressive, so we worked her by herself.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Brengungirl won the South Ocean Stakes at 2 on the Tapeta, over which she finished a flat fourth in her June 14 season debut in an Ontario-sired allowance. She awaited room along the inside in the stretch before surging late to finish a close second to Sweet Passions in the July 27 Thunder Bay Stakes on the main turf at Woodbine. “It was a tight trip between her and [Sweet Passions],” Kevin Attard recalled. “It seemed like they were fighting for the same hole, and [Sweet Passions] was just a little bit better. We’re hoping to turn the tables.” Rhaenyra set the pace in the Thunder Bay before finishing a close third, while Wozniacki was beaten just a length when fifth. Rhaenyra came back to run second as the favorite against older Ontario-sired allowance types in another six-furlong main turf sprint. “Ryaenyra has been pretty consistent all season, except for that one clunker second time out,” Kevin Attard said. “Her female family has been really good on dirt.” Sweet Passions is among the field of 10. Trained by Rick Hayashi, she had considerable trouble when sixth in her lone out-of-the-money placing this year in a July 5 Ontario-sired allowance. Lake Erie The Lake Erie attracted eight geldings, including the speedy Robert Tiller charge Go Kart Mozart, who saw his three-race win streak snapped when third behind Dark Screen going six furlongs on Woodbine’s main turf in the July 27 Lake Superior Stakes. Dark Screen notched his first stakes win in the Lake Superior after closing from a stalking position. He breezed a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 on the dirt training track at Woodbine Aug. 31 and could go favored with Fort Erie regular Juan Crawford aboard for trainer Beverley Chubb. Sunday’s Wells earned the highest Beyer Speed Figure by a 3-year-old in Canada this year when graduating second-time out with an 89 in a Tapeta sprint at Woodbine July 20. He was never in contention most recently in the Elgin, a yearling sales stakes for 3- and 4-year-olds. ◗ The 10-race card also includes the $30,000 Molson Cup and the $30,000 Le Cinquieme Essai Cup.
