ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Wagstaff didn’t get much respect in the wagering during his three-race win streak at Woodbine this summer. The Kentucky-bred son of Yorkton moves up to stakes company in Saturday’s $125,000 Toronto Cup and shouldn’t be out of his league in the one-mile inner turf event. Trained by Nathan Squires for owner Andrew Ritter, the wonderfully versatile Wagstaff took some time to come around. He graduated over 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf in his sixth start June 12 and then doubled up at a fat 23-1 in a 1 1/16-mile allowance on the Tapeta on July 13. Wagstaff was dismissed at 8-1 three weeks ago in a seven-furlong main turf allowance with no conditions. After trailing in fourth along the rail, he rallied off slow fractions to prevail with a career-high 85 Beyer Speed Figure. Trainer Kevin Attard entered the talented filly Boca Queen and Hammerhead in the 11-horse field of 3-year-olds. Boca Queen closed strongly from seventh to win her seven-furlong debut going away with an 80 Beyer on July 5. Three weeks later, in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen, the Irish-bred stretched out to a mile in another main turf tilt and was fourth as the favorite after missing the break by three lengths. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The tools are definitely there – she looks the part and she’s learning more and more each day.” Hammerhead graduated here on the inner turf at 2. The son of War Front rallied for a share while favored in each of his last two starts against nonwinners-of-two allowance company. “I thought he ran well in both races here,” Attard said. “He got caught late in the first one, but he kept trying to the wire. The most recent race, he showed a really nice turn of foot late. He lugged in a bit down the lane, but all in all, it was a solid rally.” Hammerhead breezed a half-mile in 47.60 seconds on the Tapeta on Aug. 23, much to Attard’s delight. “He’s doing great coming into the race,” Attard said. “He’s won on the inner here before, so we know he feels comfortable running on it. Hopefully, there’s some speed for him to run at.” Trainer Mark Casse entered the supplemented Garden of War along with Cyclonite and Special Session. Garden of War trailed as the heavy favorite in the aforementioned allowance won by Wagstaff, during which he prompted the pace set by his stablemate Classy War before tiring. Cyclonite was a productive handicapper in England before ending up seventh in his North American debut in an Aug. 7 allowance at Saratoga. The addition of Lasix could get him back on the beam. Special Session beat maidens and allowance opponents in his last two outings on the Tapeta. He failed to hit the board in three turf starts, which included an eighth in the Grade 1 Summer. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
