ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Kevin Attard was still beaming Friday morning about winning the Woodbine Oaks last Sunday for the second year in a row. Attard said the Oaks winner, Moira, exited the race well. “She’s perfect,” said Attard, who had to run her without hind shoes after some pre-race antics in the paddock. Attard sends out contenders Sugar Ray and Rockstar Ro in Sunday’s headliner, a seven-furlong sprint combining nonwinners-of-two allowance types with $50,000-claiming 3-year-olds. After two dull races last year on the grass, Sugar Ray got a new lease on a life when romping in his 4-year-old debut as a new gelding on July 2. He went straight to the front in the six-furlong maiden race on the Tapeta and increased his lead throughout, scoring by 10 1/4 lengths with an 87 Beyer Speed Figure. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! Attard said he hadn’t anticipated such a powerful effort from Sugar Ray, who ran with a $40,000 claiming tag in the hybrid race that also included Ontario-sired maidens. “He ran a corker of a race,” Attard said. “We gelded him over the winter and we had to put him away for some minor issues. He was training really well in the spring. We gave him some class relief. I actually thought the race might have been a little short for him, but he showed a tremendous amount of speed and kept going. Hopefully, he can duplicate that performance. We gave him enough time to recover, and he’s had a little breeze in between. He seems ready to go.” Owned by Ted Burnett, Sugar Ray was made the 8-5 favorite by morning-line maker and Woodbine head clocker Ernie Perri. Luis Contreras will ride him again. Rockstar Ro didn’t show much in two turf races at Gulfstream and Keeneland earlier this year. He ran fifth in his local debut and first start for Attard in a first-level allowance on May 29 and was outfinished for the win and ended up second when descending to this easier level most recently going 6 1/2 furlongs. “He had a little bit of a rough trip in his first race here,” Attard said. “Last time, he just got beat by a better horse. He was clearly second-best that day. He seems to like the Tapeta, and I think he’s going to like the stretchout to seven furlongs. He should be formidable.” Rafael Hernandez takes over on Rockstar Ro. The hot second-leading rider is 5 for 22 at the meet for Attard. Emmeline is the lone female in the seven-horse field. She competed in all three legs of the 2021 Canadian Triple Tiara, finishing second in both the Woodbine Oaks and Bison City Stakes. Emmeline has been idle since ending up third in her May 21 season opener in a seven-furlong allowance against her own sex. Declan Carroll will get a leg up from trainer John Mattine on the half-sister to Grade 2 stakes winner Interstatedaydream. Rounding out the field in the eighth race are Twenty Four Mamba, Chelsea Dagger, City Legend, and Souper Legacy.
