ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The road to the $1 million King’s Plate in August begins in earnest Sunday at Woodbine in the $125,000 Queenston Stakes. Trainer Kevin Attard sends out the one-two punch of Mansetti and Dewolf in the seven-furlong sprint for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds. Mansetti took the six-furlong Clarendon Stakes among his three juvenile outings before spinning his wheels over a laboring dirt surface in the Jerome Stakes on Jan. 4 at Aqueduct. When returning from a four-month break here April 27, Mansetti won the six-furlong Woodstock Stakes going away with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure under Pietro Moran, who rides Dewolf on Sunday. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Mansetti has worked four half-miles since the Woodstock and looks to be in peak form. “This season, he’s matured,” Attard said. “I loved the way he ran first time out. He relaxed well, sat inside, kicked out, and made his move – just real professional. It was what we were hoping to see from him last year, but he was always a little rank. Coming into this season, he’s been a lot more relaxed and mature. Hopefully, he can stretch out a little farther.” Dewolf placed in three consecutive route stakes last fall, including in the Grade 3 Grey and in his last outing in the Nov. 30 Coronation Futurity. The first-time Lasix user has been working up a storm, including a bullet five furlongs in 58.40 seconds on May 14 with reigning Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Caitlinhergrtness. “From a work standpoint, he had never really impressed me as a 2-year-old,” Attard recalled. “They were just okay but were never jaw-dropping. I’m very happy with him. From what I see in the mornings, he’s taken that [forward] step from 2 to 3, and I’m excited to see him on the racetrack in the afternoon. “We’ve been trying to teach him and Mansetti to relax a bit early and finish up. Dewolf has always had a decent enough running style. He relaxes but has enough early foot to stay in contention with the first flight of horses. I’ve been happy with the way he’s progressing and looking forward to his first start.” Leo Salles inherits the mount on 124-pound highweight Mansetti. He was aboard for both of the colt’s 2-year-old tallies. Trainer Josie Carroll runs Notorious Gangster and Forty N Five in the seven-horse field. Notorious Gangster got the winter off after capturing the 1 1/8-mile Coronation Futurity with an 82 Beyer. In his season opener in the Woodstock, the son of Classic Empire saved ground on the turn before closing outside for third and was subsequently promoted to second by disqualification. “Physically, he has grown this year,” Carroll said. “Mentally, he has always been a very focused, competitive horse. This race is the natural progression for him. We hope that he is a King’s Plate horse.” Forty N Five rode a golden rail in a nose score in a seven-furlong allowance here May 10. Completing the Queenston lineup are Lucky Guest, Regal Guest, and Flirting With Fire. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
