Atreides retired to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm

DRF Breeding Staff|Jan 13, 2015
Atreides wins the Monarchos Stakes
Kenny Martin/Coglianese Photos Atreides will use Sunday's one-mile Aventura as a prep for the Jan. 10 Hal's Hope.

Atreides, a multiple stakes-winner and son of multiple Grade 1-winning mare Dream Rush, has been retired from racing due to a tendon injury and will stand the 2015 breeding season at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $6,500.

The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro finishes his on-track career with four wins in five career starts for earnings of $120,176, highlighted by victories in the Monarchos Stakes and Aventura Handicap, both at Gulfstream Park. He was campaigned as a Kentucky homebred by Stonestreet Stables and was trained by Martin Wolfson.

“Atreides was the fastest and most talented colt I have trained,” Wolfson said. “He could sit and wait or go to the front any time he wanted. He had the kind of speed superstars have. He destroyed fields and was absolutely a horse with Grade 1 ability. While I am sad he retires prematurely, I look forward to training offspring of a super talented horse.”

Atreides is out of the two-time Grade 1-winning Wild Rush mare Dream Rush, whose three foals to race are all winners, also including Grade 1 winner Dreaming of Julia.

“Atreides represents the very best of the Stonestreet breeding program,” said Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke. “His dam Dream Rush is one of the most important producers in America today, already the dam of Grade 1 winner Dreaming of Julia, Atreides, and the exciting recent maiden winner, Perchance.

“We are, of course, partial to Medaglia d’Oro because of Rachel Alexandra, and his ability to sire Grade 1 winners,” Banke continued. “Atreides was a brilliant racehorse and we will support him with top mares. I don’t think we have raised a horse with more potential as a racehorse or sire prospect.“

Atreides will be available for inspection at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm during the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.
