Atlantic's Smile hits wire first as Arctic Queen favorite

Atlantic’s Smile won a head bob as the 3-5 favorite in the $50,000 Arctic Queen Stakes at Finger Lakes on Friday.
Atlantic’s Smile was making her first start since March in the six-furlong sprint for New York-bred fillies and mares. She set the early pace on a short lead inside 46-1 longshot Miss Rubycubes, disposed of that rival on the far turn, then just held on to win by a nose over 26-1 Cinematize.
Atlantic’s Smile, trained by Charlton Baker and ridden by John Davila Jr., paid $3.40 and was timed in 1:11.52 after setting splits of 21.94 seconds, 45.27, and 58.03.
Cinematize was outrun early but finished well from outside horses. She may have gained a short lead in deep stretch.
Smitten by Gold, the 7-2 second choice, was well back early but finished with interest up the rail for third, a neck behind Cinematize.
Fourth-place finisher Alwaysinstilettos challenged the winner from the outside in upper stretch but was outfinished late and ended up three-quarters of a length behind Smitten by Gold.
Sharon Spagetti and You Jane, in posts 1 and 2, respectively, both broke slowly. You Jane was fractious in the gate before the start. Sharon Spagetti appeared to hop in the air at the start.
