ELMONT PARK, N.Y. – Maryanorginger, who overcame trouble to win her career debut in the $150,000 Astoria Stakes, will be sidelined 60 days with cellulitis and a stress fracture in a hind leg, trainer Jeremiah Englehart said Monday.
Englehart said that Maryanorginger is at Dr. Patty Hogan’s farm in central New Jersey, and he hopes to bring the filly back for a fall and winter campaign.
Maryanorginger, a daughter of Strong Mandate owned by Al Gold, stumbled badly at the break and then checked shortly thereafter, but still managed to win the Astoria on June 6 by three-quarters of a length, earning a 72 Beyer Speed Figure.
Meanwhile, Englehart may have a 2-year-old colt to run in the Saratoga Special on Aug. 10 after Tuggle won at first asking on June 21 at Belmont. Tuggle, a son of Point of Entry owned by Hall of Fame football coach Bill Parcells, ran five furlongs in 57.50 seconds and earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure.
“I eventually would like to get him more distance,” Englehart said. “I’m not 100 percent sure he won’t be turf. He seems like a horse that could do both surfaces.”
