Assiniboia: Schillerthekiller at his best for Free Press

Bill Tallon|Jun 15, 2012

Schillerthekiller, invading from Canterbury Park, will be tough to beat in Sunday’s Free Press Stakes at Assiniboia Downs if he can duplicate his latest effort.

The six-furlong Free Press, the first stakes race of the meeting for 3-year-olds and upward, has attracted a field of seven and offers a purse of $30,000. Post time for the first of nine races on the Father’s Day card is 1:15 p.m. Central and the Free Press goes as race 8.

Schillerthekiller, trained by Clay Brinson, was winning for a claiming price of $5,000 at Canterbury last fall and scored for $10,000 at Hawthorne this winter. But the 4-year-old Schillerthekiller ran off the charts in his last start, which came at Canterbury in Minnesota on May 25, scoring by 3 3/4 lengths in a six-furlong first-level allowance and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 88, which was by far a career best.

Adolfo Morales will travel in for the mount on Schillerthekiller, who will begin from post 4.

U R Burnin Daylite, beaten a head in the five-furlong allowance prep for the Free Press by the talented Big Blue Caboose, will be looking to use his good speed from the outside post. Paul Nolan will ride U R Burning Daylite for trainer Ardell Sayler, and they could face an early battle from Mr Exspeedient.

Pure Glory, trounced by U R Burnin Daylite in last spring’s Golden Boy, has been in solid form at Northlands Park and should make his presence felt in this return to Manitoba. Tim Moccasin rides Pure Glory, who is coming off back-to-back second-place finishes in first-level allowances at six furlongs.

Ask Eddy, claimed for $40,000 at Oaklawn Park, would appear to want more distance.

Rounding out the field are Pierre Lapin, who scored for $7,500 and then $15,000 in his two most recent appearances, and Muted Word, claimed for $15,000 when finishing third behind Pierre Lapin last time out.
