Assiniboia handle rises

The move from Sunday afternoons to Wednesday-night racing was a shot in the arm for Assiniboia Downs this year.

Preliminary figures show $8.8 million wagered from all sources on the 63-day meeting that wound up last Sunday. The daily average handle was $139,683, up more than 38 percent from 2008.

The all-sources total last year was $6.86 million for 68 days, a daily average of $100,928.

On the racetrack, Larren Delorme was a runaway leader in the jockey standings with 86 wins. Tyrone Nelson was next with 47 and Alan Cuthbertson third with 45. Carl Anderson and Tom Gardipy dead-heated as leading trainer with 45 wins apiece. rdell Saylor was right behind with 42 scores.

Off 2 Win topped owners with 29 wins and earnings of $190,383 from 141 starts.

Silent Victory, with 5 victories from 10 starts, was the leading horse in races won while Preservata, perfect in four starts, topped the money-won list with $56,632.
