Asmussen's juveniles gearing up for stakes

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has a handful of 2-year-olds under consideration for stakes at Delta Downs, Fair Grounds, and Remington Park.
Long Range Toddy and Tobacco Road are on deck first. Asmussen said Monday that both are being pointed to the $400,000 Springboard Mile on Dec. 16 at Remington Park. The horses finished first and third in the $100,000 Clever Trevor, a seven-furlong prep Nov. 2. Long Range Toddy was always prominent for a one-length win for owner Willis Horton. The son of Take Charge Indy earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 77.
Cajun Firecracker, who finished second in the Clever Trevor, could see action Dec. 22 at Fair Grounds. The horse won a division of the Florida Sire Stakes earlier this year at Gulfstream Park. Cajun Firecracker is a son of Cajun Breeze who races for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt.
“He’ll probably run in the Sugar Bowl at Fair Grounds,” Asmussen said. “It looks like we’ll keep him sprinting.”
The $75,000 Sugar Bowl will be run over six furlongs Dec. 22.
Ninth Street, winner of the $50,000 Jean Lafitte in his last start Oct. 20 at Delta Downs, could run at the same track again Jan. 5.
“His options are open – possibly the Big Drama back at Delta,” Asmussen said.
Ninth Street rolled by six lengths in the Jean Lafitte, a seven-eighths race run around two turns. He earned a career-high 70 Beyer. The $75,000 Big Drama is at 7 1/2 furlongs. Ninth Street is by Street Boss and races for H.V. Farms.
Asmussen has a couple of notable 2-year-olds entered in a Friday allowance route at Remington. Tone Broke is coming off a 15 1/4-length maiden special weight win at a mile, and Kaziranga popped a career-high 72 Beyer for a maiden win at the same distance Oct. 31.
