Arrogate rests, but Baffert stable remains active

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club Arrogate, under Mike Smith, overcomes a horrendous start in which he spotted the field some 10 lengths to win the Dubai World Cup by daylight.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Arrogate is having a staycation at trainer Bob Baffert’s stable this month after his win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on March 25.

Arrogate arrived at Baffert’s stable Sunday after undergoing quarantine at a local facility. Baffert does not have immediate plans for Arrogate, who may not race again until the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 19.

With Arrogate resting, other handicap horses in Baffert’s stable will have a chance for important stakes wins.

Cat Burglar, who won an optional claimer at seven furlongs Friday, may start in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs July 1.

Collected, who won his first start in more than 10 months in Saturday’s $83,295 Santana Mile, is a candidate for a race such as the Grade 2 Californian Stakes at 1 1/8 miles April 22.

Hoppertunity, who finished sixth in the Dubai World Cup, could run in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 27. The $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita has been moved forward a month this year to give the race its own window on the national schedule.

Collected benefited from a perfect trip under Martin Garcia to win by 3 3/4 lengths over Avanti Bello, who won the Tiznow Stakes for California-breds on Feb. 26. The Santana Mile was Collected’s first start since he finished 10th in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico last May.

“He came out of the race body-sore all over,” Baffert said. “We sent him to Kentucky to kick him out.

“They were riding him in a Western saddle. I said, ‘You guys getting him ready for the Houston Rodeo?' ”

By City Zip, Collected has won 5 of 8 starts and has earned $480,500 for Speedway Stable. In 2016, Collected won the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita, the Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes in New Mexico and the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland before the loss on a sealed and sloppy track at Pimlico.

Dortmund was fourth as the 7-10 favorite in the Santana Mile. He emerged from the race with minor ailments, trainer Art Sherman said on Sunday, and faces an uncertain future.

“I’m licking my wounds,” he said. “He hit his ankle and cut his hock.”

Sherman said he planned to discuss plans with owner Kaleem Shah this week, but said there is a chance Dortmund could be retired.

“We’ll regroup and make a decision,” he said.

The winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in 2015, Dortmund was trained by Baffert until January, when he was transferred to Sherman after Baffert and owner Kaleem Shah parted ways. Dortmund made his debut for Sherman in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on March 11, finishing sixth in his first start on turf.
