Assiniboia Downs

Arnason edge to Spying Eyes

James Murphy|Jul 04, 2008

Sundays feature at Assiniboia Downs, the $30,000 Frank Arnason Sire Stakes, is restricted to Manitoba-sired 3-year-old colts and geldings. Local stallion Battle Cat is well represented, with his foals accounting for five of the nine entrants in the six-furlong affair.

Three maiden winners take on six maidens, including a first-time starter, and the role of favorite should fall upon Spying Eyes, a sharp maiden special weight victor last time out.

Spying Eyes earned a 56 Beyer for that effort and that rates as the top figure in this race. That, combined with his nice stalking style, makes Spying Eyes the one to beat.

Custody Battle and Battlestation both won a maiden race at age 2 but have struggled versus winners this year. Vinegar Jim ran second last year in the CTHS Sales Stakes and has two close second-place finishes this year versus $15,000 claiming maidens.

* Miss Missile, the only 3-year-old filly in Tuesdays $30,000 Canada Day Stakes for fillies and mares, went wire to wire in the one-mile race. She notched her third victory from three starts over the Assiniboia Downs oval.

In winning for the eighth time in 18 starts, Miss Missile pushed her earnings to more than $286,667.

Miss Missile, who faced top juvenile fillies Indian Blessing and Proud Spell in the Grade 3 Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds this February, opened up an easy lead and was never pressured down the lane. She held off Polynesian Kitty, last years top 3-year old filly in the province, for a 2 1/2-length score.

* Tuesday racing continues for the next three weeks with 7 p.m post times. Holiday Monday racing will be held Aug. 4 and Sept. 1 with first post at 1 p.m.
