Armed robbers steal cash from Aqueduct in Saturday night holdup
There was an armed robbery Saturday night at Aqueduct Racetrack, where two masked gunmen held up mutuel department employees, stealing an undisclosed amount of money.
According to the New York Post, the robbery occurred at approximately 10 p.m., four hours after the last of 10 races was run at Aqueduct on the Gotham Day card.
A NYRA mutuel supervisor told Daily Racing Form that the armed gunmen confronted employees who were transporting cash, in bags, they had retrieved from the mutuel machines to the vault on the first floor of track. A security guard, who was escorting the mutuel clerks, was not armed, according to the supervisor.
“They were waiting for them, they took their cell phones and their radios so they couldn’t call anybody,” the employee, who asked not to be identified, said.
A police spokesperson told The Post that the two robbers wore surgical masks.
“NYRA can confirm that an armed robbery occurred Saturday night at Aqueduct Racetrack,” Patrick McKenna, NYRA’s director of communications said Sunday. “The NYPD is leading the investigation into this matter. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.”
Though The Post reported that approximately $250,000 was stolen, McKenna could not confirm that figure.
All-sources handle on NYRA’s 10-race card Saturday was $11,130,246. A total of $1,154,195 was wagered on-track, but that doesn’t include money wagered on simulcast races.
