Arkansas Derby: Pletcher may add Danza to lineup

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainer Todd Pletcher said Danza is possible for the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby, and if the horse goes he would lift the projected field for the April 12 race at Oaklawn Park to eight. Pletcher already has Commissioner committed, joining expected starters Bayern, Conquest Titan, Ride On Curlin, Strong Mandate, Tapiture, and Thundergram.

“It’s a super, super strong race,” said Pat Pope, racing secretary for Oaklawn.
Danza was third in an optional $75,000 claimer at seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park on March 1, his first start since finishing a close third in the Grade 2 Saratoga Special in August.

“Danza is possible for the Arkansas Derby,” Pletcher said. “He’ll either go there or the Blue Grass. We’re going to continue to monitor both fields and make a decision.”
Danza would be making his two-turn debut in either the Arkansas Derby or the Blue Grass, which will be run at Keeneland on April 12. Both races are at 1 1/8 miles. Pletcher said he feels the horse will handle the two turns well. Danza is a son of Street Boss and races for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners.
Pletcher said Mike Smith has the mount on Commissioner, who is coming off a third-place finish in the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby for WinStar Farm.
The fields for both the Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass will be drawn Wednesday.
