Arizona Jeremy outduels Maius to win Arizona Fall Sales Futurity
PHOENIX – Arizona Jeremy showed courage in capturing the $72,500 ATBA Fall Sales Futurity (colts and gelding division) Saturday at Turf Paradise.
Owned by Stable HMA and trained by Molly Pearson, the 2-year-old gelded son of Ez Effort dueled for the lead under Scott Stevens in the 6-furlong event for Arizona-bred juvenile males, remained locked in battle with 4-5 favorite Maius to deep stretch, and got the better of that foe, winning by three-quarters of a length. Go Admiral Go chased in third all the way around, finishing almost three lengths behind Maius in the field of seven.
Arizona Jeremy paid $7 and ran the distance in 1:10.58. The winner’s share of $50,000 gives him earnings of $61,666 from two wins in four starts.
* Midnight Emma couldn’t handle Arizona Sun when second to that filly here Oct. 12, but she gained her revenge in the $61,117 ATBA Fall Sales Futurity (filly division). Owned and trained by Jose Silva, Midnight Emma went right to the lead under Francisco Arrieta in the 6-furlong race, was pressured by 7-10 favorite Arizona Sun, opened up, and just held off a hard-charging Delia O’Hara for the win. It was another two lengths back to Arizona Sun in third in the field of 11 Arizona-bred juvenile fillies.
Midnight Emma paid $9.20 and ran the distance in 1:11.05. The winner’s share of $30,343 pushes her earnings to $42,343 from two wins in three starts.
* Foggia bounced back from a dull eighth in the Princess of Palms here Oct. 19, gamely capturing the $52,883 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes.
Owned by Tim Bankers and trained by Manuel Ortiz Sr., Foggia was sent off the favorite and paid $5.40.
Under Glenn Corbett, Foggia went right to the lead in the 6 1/2-furlong event for Arizona-bred fillies and mares, dueled early with Bonita Annie, dispatched with that foe, was then challenged by Tiz Wild Wind into the lane. Foggia found more, edging away to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Tiz Wild Wind ran second, with Chance to Shine third in the field of nine.
Foggia ran the distance in 1:15.83. The winner’s share of $31,991 gives her a bankroll of $186,434 from nine wins in 26 starts.
