Arindel hoping Onyx can get into Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

MIAMI – Brian Cohen, president of Arindel, has confirmed that Onyx is a candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf if she is able to get into what is expected to be a full field on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
Onyx is perfect in three starts on grass, including a three-length victory in the Our Dear Peggy Stakes at Gulfstream on Sept. 28. She earned a career-high 72 Beyer Speed Figure for that effort, which would put her right in the mix with the majority of the leading U.S. candidates for the event.
Onyx is trained by Juan Alvarado with Emisael Jaramillo her regular rider.
The undefeated Graceful Kitten, another locally based 2-year-old turf specialist, also is pointing for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
Blengs dies at age 90
Trainer Vinnie Blengs, best known for his success on the New England circuit, but who wintered in south Florida throughout most his career, died last weekend at the age of 90.
Blengs won 1,981 races for purses totaling in excess of $24 million. His most notable victory came in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Handicap in 1981 with Dr. Root. Among his top clients over the years were former Gulfstream Park President David Romanik and Barry K. Schwartz.
A race will be named in his honor during the upcoming Gulfstream Park Championship meet in December.
