ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Argos punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Saturday with a head score over the favored Wild Desert in the Grade 1, $502,000 Summer at Woodbine. Argos ($15.70) was a bit rank early while steadied by Flavien Prat heading into the trouble-filled first turn of the one-mile inner turf event. Marcus J led down the backstretch while being pressed by Casson, and Argos saved ground in midpack, while Wild Desert had just one beaten under William Buick. Prat angled Argos wide for the drive and they closed strongly to make the lead in late stretch before barely holding off Wild Desert to prevail in a time of 1:36.90. Two Out Hero wound up third and then survived a stewards’ inquiry regarding some bumping on the first turn to retain that position. He was followed by Teddy’s Rocket, Thesecretadversary, Casson, Bill of Ice, Rude Procedure, Timeframe, and Marcus J. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Argos won his debut in a maiden special turf sprint at Ellis Park and was coming off a wide third here in the 6 1/2-furlong Soaring Free Stakes. “I honestly really loved the way he ran last time,” Prat said. “He only ran third, but I thought the last quarter was quite fast. I don’t think it was the right setup for him. Obviously, today, we went on the inner (course) and we had a better draw with a bit more experience, and seasoning. It was a good run.” A son of Nyquist trained by Riley Mott, Argos earned $300,000 for owner David Romanik. “I should have been in front of a TV because I couldn't see much in the stands,” Romanik said, jokingly. “I saw the red saddle towel when he took the lead. We were pretty happy when it was happening, and I didn’t think he was going to get passed, anyway. He’s got the breeding to go distance.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
