Arapahoe sees handle increase

Average daily handle and attendance both rose for the 35-day mixed meeting at Arapahoe Park that ended Sunday.

All-sources wagering on live Arapahoe races averaged $120,774 daily, up 3.5 percent from $116,870 at the 39-day meet last year. Daily attendance rose 26.7 percent, from 1,535 in 2006 to 1,945 this year.

On the track, jockey Travis Wales captured the Thoroughbred riding title with 65 winners from 220 mounts. His nearest competitor was the 2006 champ, O.A. Martinez, who had 41 winners. Trainer Jon Arnett captured his third straight Thoroughbred title at Arapahoe with 61 winners from 197 starters. Second was Butch Gleason with 31.
