Aqueduct: Miss Narcissist by a head in Fifth Avenue

David Grening|Nov 23, 2013
Miss Narcissist
NYRA photo Miss Narcissist, ridden by Junior Alvarado, wins the Fifth Avenue division of the New York Stallion Stakes on Saturday.

The favored Miss Narcissist ($4.10), under Junior Alvarado, chased the maiden Hey Kiddo all the way around the track before catching her in the final strides to win the $150,000 Fifth Avenue division of the New York Stallion Stakes by a head Saturday.

It was 1 1/2 lengths farther back to Champagne Ruby in third.

The win was the third straight for Miss Narcissist, a daughter of Freud owned by Acqua Nova Stable and Winter Park Partners and trained by Linda Rice.

Miss Narcissist chased Hey Kiddo, under Joel Rosario, through fractions of 23.26 seconds and 47.03 for the opening half-mile. In the stretch, Alvarado had difficulty getting Miss Narcissist to change leads, and though she never did, Miss Narcissist got up in time.

“Turning for home, I tried a couple of times to make her switch leads, and she did not want anything to do with that,” Alvarado said. “I just kept going with her. She won pretty much because she was the class of the race. I’m sure if she would have switched leads, she would have given me a better kick at the end.”

Miss Narcissist covered the six furlongs in 1:11.60 over a fast track.

Rice said she might attempt to stretch Miss Narcissist out around two turns in the $100,000 East View Stakes here Dec. 15.
