Caught between the end of a long winter and a weather-delayed start to the turf racing season, the racing office is scrambling to fill programs during a stretch from last Thursday through April 6, when Aqueduct runs 10 of 11 days – April Fools’ Day being the only dark day. Just 57 horses were rounded up for Sunday’s nine races, and the final “Grand Monday” at the Big A marks the first eight-race card here since Breeders’ Cup Saturday, Nov. 2. The traditional Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule resumes in April. First post remains 1:20 p.m., with some tweaks in an abridged wagering menu. The pick six begins with race 3. The key race for other multirace bets is race 5, which, in addition to anchoring the pick five and the early pick four, as usual, becomes the opening leg of the late pick four. There are five betting interests in race 7, a one-mile optional claimer for New York-bred fillies and mares that serves as the feature. Miss Da Point, who embarked on a three-race winning streak for John Toscano when last on the main track Dec. 5, is back on short rest after finishing a distant third against open company last Monday. Prior to that, she had returned from a freshening in a spot like this Feb. 23 and ran off to a long lead beneath Manny Esquivel, whose saddle appeared to slip at some point down the backstretch. Miss Da Point, a stakes winner on the inner dirt track in each of the past two winters, could be pressed for the lead by Carameaway, who is part of a Mitch Friedman-trained entry along with the late-running Dreaming of Cara. Princess Mara, claimed from a runner-up finish last out by Richard Schosberg, has posted five of her seven career wins in wire-to-wire fashion and could be sent early from her outside post. Lady Gracenote, who won her last start on the main track back in November 2012, makes her 7-year-old debut for Jason Servis. Royal Suspicion, who won her second-level allowance condition for Jim Ryerson during closing week of Aqueduct’s 2013 fall meet, makes her third start back from a freshening and appears primed for a good try from the rail. Stakes fields take shape Probable starters for Saturday’s stakes quadruple-header are as follows: ◗ Wood Memorial: Kid Cruz, Kristo, Los Borrachos, Samraat, Social Inclusion, Uncle Sigh, and Wicked Strong. ◗ Carter Handicap: Central Banker, Clearly Now, Golden Ticket, Sahara Sky, and Strapping Groom. ◗ Gazelle: Bird Maker, Got Lucky, My Miss Sophia, Regent’s House, Sweet Reason, Taris, Vero Amore, and Wraith. ◗ Bay Shore: Financial Mogul, Havana, Kobe’s Back, Loki’s Vengeance, Oliver Zip, and Schivarelli.
