Aqueduct: Lord of the Night attracts six

There is no shortage of training talent in Sunday’s $100,000 Lord Of the Night overnight stakes, which attracted six older routers that have never won a stakes.

Breaking from the outside in the mile and 70-yard race is Pratereo, the 9-5 morning-line favorite, who was claimed for $62,500 in July by Drawing Away Stable and David Jacobson.

Pratereo has won himself out nearly twice over since then, including an allowance win with a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure at Aqueduct’s fall meet.

First time on the inner dirt, Pratereo ran out of ground in the six-furlong Spooky Mulder and finished third behind stablemate Candyman E, who was among Jacobson’s 159 winners on the New York Racing Association circuit through Thursday, equaling Gary Contessa’s record, established in 2007.

With 11 horses in seven races Saturday and 11 more in six races Sunday, Jacobson appeared a shoo-in to take sole possession of the record before the final program of the season on New Year’s Eve.

“I enjoyed it, now it’s [their] turn,” said four-time New York training champion Contessa, who will send out the uncoupled duo of Regulus and Speightscity. “Drawing Away Stable was the nucleus for a sensational run to the record.”

Regulus, who hasn’t run two turns on dirt since his seasonal bow in the Grade 2 San Fernardo Stakes back in January, makes his second start back from a layoff after setting the pace to the stretch of a high-end optional claimer at seven furlongs.

Speightscity, meanwhile, returns to the inner track for the first time since a second-place finish at 44-1 in the 2012 Withers Stakes.

Also figuring as part of the pace is Colleen’s Sailor, a Canadian-bred colt who was transferred to Chris Englehart in early fall and won back-to-back starts as part of the trainer’s run to an 11th straight title at Finger Lakes and 13th overall.

Colleen’s Sailor has lost only once on dirt, when third in the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes as a 3-year-old in 2012.

Breaking from the rail is Aussi Austin, who was claimed for $30,000 in January and has since earned nearly three times that amount for Rudy Rodriguez, last year’s winter meet kingpin.

After a wide trip in the Slew O’Gold overnight stakes on turf, Aussi Austin makes his first start on the inner dirt.

Kiaran McLaughlin, who sent out his 100th winner of the year when Baraghah garnered an allowance race at Laurel on Dec. 20, sends out Farhaan, recently a troubled fourth behind Pratereo.
