Aqueduct cancels Thursday card because of cold weather
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Live racing scheduled for Thursday at Aqueduct was canceled due to extreme cold, which is forecast to return over the weekend.
Thursday’s forecast called for a high temperature of 20 degrees with wind speeds from 15 to 25 miles per hour, creating wind chills in the single digits. Racing is scheduled to resume Friday with temperatures slightly higher and wind speeds slightly lower.
But by Sunday, frigid temperatures are again in the forecast along with winds that will make it feel like the single digits. There is a similar forecast for Monday when Aqueduct is slated to run a New Year’s Day card that includes the $150,000 Jerome Stakes, a one-turn mile race that offers qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby.
Thursday’s eight-race card included the $100,000 East View Stakes for New York-bred juvenile fillies. It was not brought back for Sunday’s card, to be drawn Friday, and as of 9 a.m. Thursday it had not yet been decided when the race would be brought back.
