Aqueduct cancels Sunday card due to high winds

David Grening|Nov 24, 2013

Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to high winds, according to track officials. Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to remain open for simulcasting.

According to Glen Kozak, NYRA’s vice president/facilities and racing surfaces, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for sustained winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kozak said the cancellation did not have to do with temperatures that were in the low 20s Sunday morning.

“Temperatures aren’t the issue,” he said. “The track is fine; the turf had a little crust on it. It’s the wind that’s the issue.”

Live racing is scheduled to resume Wednesday.
