AQHA Distaff Challenge will try again
Time for a do-over.
Two weeks after the $100,000 AQHA Distaff Challenge was declared a no-contest because of a gate malfunction, the 10 fillies and mares who lined up on Nov. 17 are back for another attempt in the 400-yard race at Los Alamitos on Sunday.
The runners will have the same post positions that were drawn for the Nov. 17 race when some of the gates opened while others failed. Seven of the fillies and mares completed the course that night, while three never ran.
Glen Ellyn, who was running in $20,000 claiming races at Remington Park as recently as May, finished first in the abandoned race, a head in front of One Hot Habit.
The heavy favorite on Nov. 17 was One Sweet Racy and she will again be a focus for bettors. Trained by Christopher O’Dell for Johnny Trotter, One Sweet Racy was second in the Mildred Vessels Handicap for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos on Sept. 23. One Sweet Racy’s stall did not open on Nov. 17.
Her main rivals are Duck Dash N Go and One Hot Habit.
Duck Dash No Go, trained by Monty Arrossa, has won half of her 24 starts, including a 100-yard allowance race Sept. 24. One Hot Habit was second to One Sweet Racy in the California Distaff Challenge on Aug. 12, a race that made those fillies eligible for Sunday’s rearranged race.
