LEXINGTON, Ky. – Edgar Morales is named to ride the entire Wednesday card at Keeneland and has plenty of mounts for the balance of the four-day stretch that ends the 17-day fall meet. Still, the 20-year-old native of Puerto Rico may not have enough underneath him to become just the second apprentice to earn a riding title at this 82-year-old track, but he has enjoyed a sensational meet nonetheless. Morales has ridden seven winners so far, good enough for a tie for fourth with Florent Geroux in the jockey standings behind Julien Leparoux and Jose Ortiz (10 each) and Tyler Gaffalione (9). “If you try, and have horses, you can make it,” Morales said. Among jockeys with at least 30 mounts, Morales has easily the highest ROI for a $2 win bet on each of his rides ($5.90), having scored on such pricey winners as Fun Paddy ($110.60), She’s a Lucky One ($67.20), Due to His Charm ($32.20), and Red Dane ($26.80). Julio Espinoza, a retired jockey who has mentored numerous young Hispanic riders as their agent, strongly believes Morales is a special talent. “He reminds me a lot of a young Ramon Dominguez, even Braulio Baeza,” Espinoza said. “He always is saving something for the end.” Morales said his older brother, Roberto, who has ridden in Louisiana in recent years after starting his career in Kentucky in 2011, has had the greatest influence on his career. “He brought me to Louisiana and taught me a lot, galloping and everything,” before his career began last fall at Keeneland, he said. Morales is due to lose his five-pound weight allowance Nov. 17, when he will be riding at Churchill Downs. He and Espinoza will go to Fair Grounds at some point, then possibly to Oaklawn Park, although no firm dates have been set. Leparoux, now 35, is the only apprentice ever to lead a Keeneland meet. He tied with Rafael Bejarano (17 wins each) for the 2006 spring-meet riding title and subsequently has won 10 Keeneland titles outright. Gaffalione, the 2015 Eclipse Award winner for top apprentice, leads all jockeys at this meet in mount earnings with nearly $1.1 million.
