Apprentice Ellingwood resumes riding after concussion
Apprentice jockey Emily Ellingwood is scheduled to resume riding this weekend nearly two months after she suffered a concussion in a spill on Dec. 31 at Santa Anita. Ellingwood said Friday that she needed a final doctor’s clearance later that day to be permitted to ride.
She has two mounts on Saturday and Sunday.
“I didn’t want to rush it and come back too soon,” she said.
Ellingwood, 27, said doctors were concerned whether she had any issues with headaches or dizziness, which she said she has not experienced in the week since she resumed exercising horses.
Ellingwood has won 24 races from 234 mounts. On Dec. 31, Ellingwood was aboard Bright Leaf when the 2-year-old appeared to jump tracks while leading in the stretch. Ellingwood was unseated, but walked into an ambulance.
