SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Star of Mystery would clearly be the one to beat if she runs in Friday’s $150,000 Coronation Cup for 3-year-old fillies at Saratoga. However, trainer Charlie Appleby has cross-entered Star of Mystery in Sunday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Quick Call Stakes for 3-year-olds here and communicated by text Wednesday that no decision would be made until he sees the fields for both races. Star of Mystery defeated older males twice this year in Dubai, including in the Group 2 Blue Point Sprint on Jan 26. Last month, in the Grade 1 Jaipur at Saratoga, Star of Mystery finished third, 3 3/4 lengths behind Cogburn, the top older male turf sprinter in North America. The Jaipur has already produced two next-out winners. Fourth-place finisher Coppola won the William Garrett at Horseshoe Indianapolis and seventh-place finisher Filo Di Arianna took the Highlander at Woodbine. “She gained valuable experience in her first start,” Appleby said. “I was delighted the way she broke from the gate, she put up a big performance being placed against the older generation and taking on the colts as well. Dropping back against her own age group, potentially against the fillies, she’ll take all the beating.” :: Gain a competitive edge at Saratoga with DRF's premier handicapping data — purchase our meet packages today and bet with confidence. Flavien Prat rides from post 10, though she is likely to move in a spot as trainer Will Walden indicated Wednesday that Pipsy, the Grade 3 Soaring Softly winner at Aqueduct, would scratch to await the $150,000 Mahony Stakes on Aug. 11. Should Star of Mystery scratch Friday, Toupie and Twirling Queen likely become the two top contenders. Toupie, who finished three-quarters of a length behind Twirling Queen in the Mamzelle on May 11 at Churchill Downs, came back to win the Stormy Blues Stakes on June 16 at Laurel Park. Trainer Graham Motion, who is on a hot streak the last two months, said that race was designed to get Toupie to this one. “I thought she did it pretty nicely. I thought she was pretty comfortable,” Motion said of the Stormy Blues. “Her only blemish was when I tried to stretch her out, which was my foolishness. She’s different horse this year, she’s grown up a lot.” Jorge Ruiz rides Toupie from the rail. Twirling Queen is 3 for 3 since being moved to Jose D’Angelo. Prior to winning the Mamzelle, she won an an allowance and a stakes over Gulfstream Park’s Tapeta surface. Baraye, trained by Wesley Ward, comes into the Coronation Cup having defeated older fillies in a turf allowance at Keeneland and an off-the-turf allowance at Churchill Downs. Kairyu, trained by Cherie DeVaux, was a Group 3 winner sprinting on turf in Ireland last year. After a ninth-place finish in the Grade 2 Appalachian going a mile in April, Kairyu finished second, with traffic trouble, in the Soaring Softly. In Our Time, Dancing Duchess, Ever So Sweet, and Cloudwalker complete the field on turf. Value Area, Do Gooder, and Golden Degree were entered to run only if the race is transferred to dirt. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
